Telemedicine services in neurosurgery include the transmission of image material (CT, MRI) and other form of diagnostic results from a telemedicine access centre to a telemedicine specialist centre, thereby enabling neurosurgical consultations in institutions which do not have neurosurgical activity. By using telemedicine services in neurosurgery, it is possible to correctly diagnose a patient in the shortest possible time and enable further and purposeful treatment, which is especially important in emergencies.

By operating telemedicine services in neurosurgery, unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are avoided, and the patient’s stay in a telemedicine access centre is reduced. If necessary, the patient is immediately transferred to a clinical hospital where specialist diagnostics and treatment occur, thus contributing to a more rational overall treatment of neurosurgical patients thanks to the shorter diagnostic time and the fact that patients are referred to institutions where appropriate treatment can take place. In addition, another benefit is further or continuous education of doctors: thanks to a continuous inflow of new information and the possibility to consult with experts, doctors are able to actively participate in diagnosing and treating all types of patients, relieving them of fear and doubts and increasing their confidence.
